Caravan, horse trailer or moving house – with class BE you can tow trailers up to 3.5 t.
What you can drive with BE
With class BE you may tow a trailer of up to 3.5 t maximum permitted weight behind a class B vehicle. Without BE, the limit is a 750 kg trailer or 3.5 t for the whole combination.
Requirements
- Class B driving licence (you can also get it at the same time)
- Minimum age 18
- Eye test and proof of first aid, if you haven’t already submitted them for class B
How it works
- Theory: class-specific lessons on trailers, loading and driving physics. There is no theory test for BE.
- Driving lessons: practice lessons with our trailer, plus special drives: 3 × country roads, 1 × motorway, 1 × after dark.
- Practical test with pre-drive safety checks, coupling up and basic manoeuvres such as reversing.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need class BE for a caravan?
Usually, yes. Many caravans weigh more than 750 kg, and together with the towing vehicle you quickly go over 3.5 t. What counts is the maximum permitted weight in the vehicle documents, not the actual weight.
Is there a theory test for BE?
No. Class BE only has a practical test. Theory lessons on trailers are still part of the training.
How much does a class BE licence cost?
The fixed costs come to €1.345: basic fee, the five mandatory special drives and the practical test. On top of that come practice lessons at €95 each.
